We are so happy to have been able to organize a second STEM Day at another local school.

This March, we collaborated with the Women in STEM society to further inspire secondary schoolers to get involved in the fantastic world of STEM.

The day began with an assembly to the entire student body where we explained what STEM is and how it is an important discipline to further our knowledge of the world and other planets. The students were then split into groups and would participate in a full-day activity of understanding, programming and engaging with robots controlled by Micro:bits.

The day was split between 3 activities:

  1. Assembling the robot according to a specific set of instructions,

  2. Programming the robot to avoid walls and obstacles using the sensor,

  3. Programming the robot to avoid black lines on a white piece of paper.

Prior to the day, Coding Club set up block code, which the students would them use to program the robot. Block code is an intuitive and approachable method to learn complex coding such as the ones from these tasks, which we thought was appropriate to coding novices and beginner programmers.

At the end of the day, students had a better grasp on how robots work, how they see the world and how they can be used in research.

We are very proud to have been able to introduce so many young minds to STEM and its various applications in the world of today. Using robots was a great way to stimulate curiosity and teamwork between students, as well as making STEM a much more approachable discipline for students which may have found it intimidating.
